right place, right time

Right Place, Right Time
Reflections on How Pictures Work by Molly Bang

I began my study with Molly Bang’s How Pictures Work. Her principles illuminate the importance of intentionality in visual composition — how the placement of shapes and the organization of elements convey emotion and meaning.

As I read, I took careful notes to internalize her ideas. Bang’s Little Red Riding Hood example is a masterclass in simplicity and clarity. Through this exercise, I became more aware of how arrangement and proportion evoke psychological and emotional responses. Every design decision becomes a deliberate act of communication.

To deepen my understanding, I translated these principles into sketches in my notebook and later expanded them through collage, integrating pattern and color.

Bang’s clear and insightful presentation has become embedded in my creative process. I now approach composition with heightened awareness — placing shapes with purpose, understanding their relationships, and allowing space for improvisation.
